ST. PAUL, Minnesota (October 17, 2011) – Hundreds of Minnesota Nurses will be taking to the streets of downtown St. Paul during Tuesday’s rush hour to publicly call for a Wall Street Transaction Tax.

Beginning at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, Members of the Minnesota Nurses Association will march along St. Paul’s Wabasha Street, carrying banker-themed Halloween masks and handing out “trick or treat” packages to passersby highlighting MNA’s support for “The Main Street Contract for America.” The nurses’ journey will begin at the Crowne Plaza Hotel – where MNA is currently holding its annual Convention – and end with a rally outside the Wells Fargo Building on Wabasha Street. The action will be streamed live online at www.NurseTV.org.

The “Main Street Contract” was created by National Nurses United, the nation’s largest union of professional RNs, and calls for the implementation of a Financial Transaction Tax on the types of risky Wall Street transactions that led to the 2008 financial meltdown. More information can be found online at www.MainStreetContract.org.

Founded in 1905, the Minnesota Nurses Association represents more than 20,000 nurses in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. MNA is also a founding member of National Nurses United, which represents more than 170,000 RNs across the United States.

Why the Main Street Contract? Why OccupyMN? Why Occupy Wall Street? Here’s Why!

Below is a great explanation from NNU President Jean Ross and MNA President Linda Hamilton answering the “why” question behind MNA and NNU’s involvement in the Main Street Contract and OccupyMN/Occupy Wall Street efforts. This video was taken at the OccupyMN protests in Minneapolis this week:

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (October 7, 2011) – The Minnesota Nurses Association stands in support of, and in solidarity with, the OccupyWallStreet.org street protests and rallies happening across the country – including today’s “OccupyMN” event near the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis.

We applaud the commitment, savvy and sacrifice exhibited by the multitude of students, union members, clergy and many others from all walks of life who have come together to loudly and clearly place the blame for the nation’s pain where it belongs. Wall Street caused the financial crisis, and we share the growing demand that Wall Street pay us back.

Led by our national union, National Nurses United (NNU), which represents more than 170,000 RNs across the country, MNA nurses are leading the fight for a Main Street Contract for the American People. The Contract calls for meeting the basic needs of a civilized society and ensuring that all pay their fair share. Currently, the wealthiest individuals and corporations do not pay their fair share. NNU is campaigning for a Financial Transaction Tax on Wall Street to help remedy that inequity. (Learn more about this movement at www.MainStreetContract.org)

As nurses, our motto in this fight is simple – “Heal America. Make Wall Street Pay!”

Formed in 1905, the Minnesota Nurses Association represents more than 20,000 nurses in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. Learn more about MNA online at www.MNNurses.org.
